читать дальшеThe Midheaven (or MC) and the Immum Coeli (or IC) are interpreted in much the same way as the Ascendant and Descendant are interpreted, in that they are all angles of the chart. The Midheaven is the point where a planet has reached the highest point in the sky that it will reach during the day’s cycle; it is the point when that planet stops rising and begins to set. The Immum Coeli is the point where a planet has reached the lowest point in its daily cycle; it is the point where that planet stops setting and begins to rise again. The Ascendant, for the record, is the point when a rising planet is first visible on the horizon, while the Descendant is the point when the planet sets, and drops below the horizon. In most house systems, the MC is also the cusp of the 10th house, while the IC is the cusp of the 4th house.
The Midheaven is, then the most visible point in the chart. It is in every sense, the point of culmination. The IC, on the other hand, is the most hidden, least visible point in the chart; it is also the foundation of the chart. The MC/IC axis has to do with how we interact with groups, and with society in general (as opposed to our one-to-one relationships). Traditionally, the IC and the 4th house relate to the Father, while the MC and the 10th house relate to the mother. For some reason, modern astrology either reverses these (associating the 4th house with the Mother), or else associates the 4th house with the more “nurturing” parent. Everyone agrees, however, that the MC/IC axis has to do with our parents, and by extension, with how we learned to become a member of society, as well as how we respond and react to authority figures.
We often overlook the fact that because the angles are axes, that considering one without the other is only getting half of the picture. The key with any axis, with any perfect opposition, is to find balance between the energy and motivations represented by the signs. This goes for the Ascendant/Descendant, the MC/IC and the Moon’s Nodes.
When looking at the MC in a person’s chart, consider that the sign of the MC is how that individual wants to be known by the world as an individual. A person with Pisces on the MC will want to appear as compassionate and spiritual; a person with Aries on the MC will want to appear strong and independent. These qualities will often figure strongly in an individual’s choice of career (but not necessarily of their job). The Midheaven relates to our life path and our life’s work—the types of experiences that we would like to devote our lives to. Looking at the house, sign, aspects, and general condition of the planet that rules the sign on the Midheaven will give more insight into how an individual may tend to go about pursuing their life path. The thing to keep in mind about the MC is that it represents how and where we want to be recognized and appreciated for our individual contributions to society.
The IC, on the other hand, represents the most personal, the most private point in the chart. The IC is how we connect with our soul identity, and indeed, the IC is where and how we connect with our past, our roots, our ancestors, and our source. This part of the chart is rarely seen or experienced by anyone except for the individual, and even then, many individuals don’t allow themselves to fully explore their internal, private world. Without a solid foundation from the IC, however, we can never experience the success and recognition that we seek though the MC. The person with Pisces on the MC will have Virgo on their IC, and without a fundamental understanding of how to discriminate and stay grounded in the physical, they will never be anchored enough to explore the compassionate and healing energy of Pisces; the person with Aries on the MC has a Libra IC, and in order to be able to go out on their own as an individual, they have to have a solid understanding of how to maintain an internal balance and harmony, a foundation of peace from which they can take focused action. As with the MC, looking at the placement and condition of the planet that rules the IC will give more insight into how an individual may experience and express this part of their lives.
When planets transit the MC/IC axis, we tend to experience them in terms of our public/private life. Tracey asked about Saturn transiting the IC, for example. Well, since Saturn is always about taking responsibility, about creating structure and crystallizing things, when Saturn transits the IC, we often experience a time when we must take responsibility for our personal life. This may involve our families (both of choice and of origin), or it could also have to do with firming up and structuring our core emotional identity. Although I suppose that it could indicate taking on new responsibilities with respect to a home or real estate (because the 4th house and the IC are related to these things as well), the 4th House and IC are not usually associated with marriage; being a one-to-one relationship, Marriage has more to do with the Ascendant/Descendant axis.
On the other hand, if Saturn were transiting the MC, the responsibility and structure would tend to manifest with respect to an individual’s career or life path. When Saturn transits the MC, it’s often a time when we feel compelled to take stock of what we’re doing with our life; if we’re on the right path, we often receive some well-deserved benefits; if we’re not, Saturn’s lessons aren’t terribly pleasant.
In either situation, however, both angles are affected; when Saturn conjuncts the MC, it’s also opposite the IC and vice versa. If we have to take responsibility for our public life, our private, personal life is going to be effected; and likewise, when our personal, inner world is put to the test, it’s going to effect how we appear and interact with the rest of the world.
